# Export Markdown

> Download a guide as a Markdown document with its screenshots.

Use Markdown export when a guide has to live somewhere written in Markdown: a docs repository, a wiki, an Obsidian vault, or a handbook your team edits in plain text.

<Note>Markdown export is available on the Pro plan.</Note>

## Export a guide

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Share" icon="share-2">
    Open the guide and click **Share**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Export" icon="download">
    Open the **Export** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Export Markdown" icon="circle-check">
    Click **Export** in the **Export to Markdown** row. Keep the tab open while the document is
    built. When it finishes, the Markdown is copied to your clipboard.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Download the file" icon="download">
    The row changes to **Download**. Click it to save the Markdown file to your downloads. If
    clipboard access was denied, the file is still available here.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What you get

A `guide.md` file. Markdown cannot carry pictures inside the document, so each step's screenshot is stored for you and linked by URL — paste the Markdown into Notion, a GitHub issue or your docs and the pictures come with it.

Each step becomes a heading with its narration underneath and its screenshot below that, drawn the same way the player draws it — background, framing, cursor, arrows, labels, numbers, highlights and blurs included.

<Note>
  The pictures are served from an unguessable address, the same way a guide's screenshots already
  are. Anyone you give the Markdown to can see them, so treat the document as you would the guide
  itself.
</Note>

Exporting the same guide again reuses the pictures already stored, and deleting a guide deletes them with it.

## Markdown or PDF

| | Markdown | [PDF](/sharing/export-pdf) |
| - | - | - |
| Shape | A document you can edit | A document you can print |
| Pictures | Linked, stored for you | Inside the file |
| Best for | Docs repos, wikis, vaults | Reading, printing, attaching |

## Prefer links or embeds

Use a [share link](/sharing/share-link) or [embed](/sharing/embed) when you can. With links and embeds, edits stay live and [Insights](/analytics/overview) keep tracking.

<Tip>Re-export after changing the guide. Downloaded files do not update automatically.</Tip>
